Amazon Teaches Alexa to Speak Hinglish (English+Hindi) for Indian Users

Amazon has start shipping Echo speakers in India. The company had already bought the speakers in foreign markets like UK and Germany. During last year, a team of speech scientists, engineers, linguists and developers had given a local touch to the Alexa virtual assistant.

The Alexa to be delivered in India uses an amalgamation of English and Hindi and that too in proper Indian accent. She knows some special days like Republic Day and wishes listeners on each special day. She calls living room as ‘drawing room’ and also add things to your shopping list.

We wanted our devices to talk, walk and feel Indian,” said Parag Gupta, head of product management for Amazon Devices in India. “Alexa is not an American visitor, instead she totally has an Indian personality.” The companies like Apple and Google are also implementing the idea of training virtual assistants the language of the area they are being used. So, the user also feels comfortable with the virtual assistants speaking same as them.

The Amazon, Apple, Google, and others are using Voice-based interfaces to increase their audience and convenience to the audience.

Hinglish is the way to achieve that,” said M.S. Krishnan, professor of technology and operations at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan. For the Indian market, the Amazon has decreased the price of these devices to 30%.
